Disposable Underground #3 (VA, USA) 1991, Editor: “Richard Johnson”
Issue #2 of DI, out of the Virginia suburbs of Washington DC. Again, Rich was in early grind outfit Enemy Soil, prior to going on to playing in the likes of Agoraphobic Nosebleed and now Drugs of Faith. This long running zine can now be found online in downloadable format here, both new and old issues.
This issue has live reviews, adverts, reviews, opinions (one from Deceased guitarist Mike Smith) features and interviews with/on the Foundations Forum, Riki Rachtman, Slayer Zine, Cannibal Corpse, Atheist, Autopsy, Bolt Thrower, Coroner, Death, Dark Angel, Grave, Gorguts, Hexx, Fates Warning, Impetigo, Believer, Overkill, Queensryche, Pestilence, Relapse Records, Suffocation, Sacrifice, Unleashed, Century Media and much more…
Subversive Agenda #3 (USA) 1995. Editor: “Chris Wojcik”
Mid-90s effort from Northern California, very representative of the indie labels (with ads from Red Stream, Visceral Productions, Rage Records etc. inside) and second-generation bands in the underground at the time – which was also when we started to see the fanzine culture itself start to sputter a bit (with the internet on the horizon). This has some pretty entertaining interviews, particularly with Incantation and Kataklysm on their ’95 US tour, a fun, early Exhumed interview, tons of reviews, an odd anti-“poser” black metal rant (from a guest, not the editor), tons of cool ads, demo reviews(!) and more from Bhaobhan Sidhe, Compression, Enthroned (California) , Esoteric, Gonkulator, Hellwitch, Hemdale, Milwaukee Scene Report, Pale Existence, Ads, Zine reports etc. (Thanks Vladimir)
Headfucker #4 (Italy) January, 1997. Editor: “Raffaella Guerini”
Released during the dark days of the death metal underground, this exceptionally well designed, well-printed, and well written zine out of Brescia (in Northern Italy) had a very nice run and was a standout for the death metal scene at the time. While traveling in Europe during the summer of 1997, I had the opportunity to meet both Raffi and her co-editor Carlo, and I will never forget how nice and welcoming they were, showing me around the region over those few days I stayed with them. This MASSIVE issue in particular features interviews with Exit 13, Hemdale, Deranged, Exhumed, Necrosis (Florida), Sepsism, Deeds of Flesh, Festering Puke, Wicked Innocence, Infernal Torment, Necrotic Mutation, artist Eric Kim, and TONS of reviews that will give you a good cross-section of all the bands that were passing ads around 1996.
SOD – Sounds of Death (Missouri, USA) #3, Summer 1993. Editor: “David Horn”
Like the issue #2 which I posted up a while back (see archives to the right), this is again sort of ‘in between’ a zine and magazine. David Horn’s eventually long-running Sounds Of Death still remained ambitious, and this time around it is packed with original art contributions from Cannibal Corpse cover artist Vincent Locke. Featuring pro-print, color cover, while keeping the underground feel, this issue also has an interview with Locke, along with Brujeria, Dismember, Cancer (nice tour story from their US tour with Deicide and Demolition Hammer), Venom (with trash talk on good old Raven), Kataklysm, Morbid Angel, and Vader. Lastly, TONS of cool record label ads.
Intellektual Spew #5 (TN, USA) 1998, Editors: “Bart and Jeff”
Late in the 1990s, print zines were still thriving (despite the internet taking its first stabs at online-zines through DIY sites hosted by Geocities, among others), and Intellektual Spew was a standout in the underground during the time. It was nicely printed and bound, and featured underground bands across the metal spectrum, as by 1998, death and black metal fractured into numerous spin-off subgenres that labels The End Records (interviewed here) began to specialize in. This issue features the likes of an EARLY Arch Enemy (still with the original singer), Rotten Sound, Assuck, Australia’s Damaged, Quebec’s Martyr, Finland’s And Oceans, Incantation, and Agalloch members ‘other’ band Sculptured. There is also an interesting article on homophobia in the metal underground, as well as with Andreas from The End Records. The cover is by notable underground artist Russ Evans.
