Army of Darkness #1 (Poland) 1993
Army of Darkness #1 (USA) 1993. Ed. ” Sikora Sławek” (Polish)
This is a pretty obscure relic from the early 90s Polish underground and its packed with pretty much (only) Polish bands–and its written in Polish. However, it does reflect how vibrant the scene was there at the time, and how much there is to dig up and explore if one has the inclination to do so. Interviews, features, adverts and reviews with Armagedon, Ghost, Azazel, Cenotaph, Carnage Records, Convent, Christ Agony, Cryptic Tales, Dark Opera, Abathor, Industry, Gothic, Neolithic, Graveland, Hypnosis, Parracide, Leviathan, Pagan Records, Magnus, Mordor, Mussorgski, Pascal, Prosecutor, Pestilent Angel, Xantotol, Mastomah, Sparagmos, Vader, Violent Dirge and more.

Hard Stuff #1 (Poland-US) Sept. 1994
Hard Stuff #1 (Poland-US) Sept. 1994. Editor: “Mariusz Kmiolek”
A one-off, combined effort from Poland’s Thrash ’em All and US’s Loud Magazine. I am not sure if it ever got off the ground into a regular publication(?), but this short introductory issue from late in 1994 was still pretty cool, with some ads and pics I have not seen elsewhere, some reviews (demo and album), as well as a selection of interviews and features on Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Absu and Setenced. (thanks Pawel)

Eruptions From Below #5 (Toronto, Canada) 1993
Eruptions From Below #5 (Toronto, Canada) 1993. Editor: “Laurie Fortune”
Copied and stapled zine out of Ontario (formerly out of Buffalo). Solid and packed with ads, representing the ’93 death metal underground quite well. Features numerous reviews, and (brief) interviews with Cannibal Corpse, Lucifers Hammer, Deteriorate, Angelkill, Exterminance, and more, with the highlights being the killer live reviews of the classic Suffocation, Obituary, and Deicide tours from that year.

SOD – Sounds of Death (Missouri, USA) #3, Summer 1993
SOD – Sounds of Death (Missouri, USA) #3, Summer 1993. Editor: “David Horn”
Like the issue #2 which I posted up a while back (see archives to the right), this is again sort of ‘in between’ a zine and magazine. David Horn’s eventually long-running Sounds Of Death still remained ambitious, and this time around it is packed with original art contributions from Cannibal Corpse cover artist Vincent Locke. Featuring pro-print, color cover, while keeping the underground feel, this issue also has an interview with Locke, along with Brujeria, Dismember, Cancer (nice tour story from their US tour with Deicide and Demolition Hammer), Venom (with trash talk on good old Raven), Kataklysm, Morbid Angel, and Vader. Lastly, TONS of cool record label ads.
