Drowned Magazine #2 (Spain) 1991

Drowned Magazine #2 (Spain) 1991. Editor: “Dave Rotten”

From Drowned Productions‘ own Dave Rotten, this zine is an incredible survey of the underground from late 1990 into 1991, with a lot of original photos, some from Dave himself (apparently from a trip to Sweden that included meeting up with Dissection and others). Very informative with scene reports from Italy and Finland, well-written reviews and interviews and features on many demo-era classics such as Disgrace, Damnatory, Disharmonic Orchestra, Pandemonium, Demigod, Dissection, Infernal Death, Excidium, False Prophet, Sentenced, Human Waste, Impaled Nazarene, Convulse, Sinister, Necrophobic, My Dying Bride, Purtenance, Severence, Vader, Old Funeral, Phlegethon, Putrid Offal, Disembowelment, Malevolent Creation, Sigh, Vital Remains, Suffocation, Tormentor, Unleashed, Vacant Grave, Gorefest and many more…(courtesy of the scanning work from Tezcat from the NWN! board – many thanks/gracias).

Pestilence Zine #2 (Chile) 1991. Editors: “Patrcio Illanes” and “Hector Guzman”

From Chile, this zine is half Spanish, half English…sticks to espanol for the Chilean interviews and reviews, and goes to English for the international…features a good amount of Morbid Angel content (including a tour flyer for the 1991 Blessed Are the Sick tour I have never seen…from Orlando) and a brief interview with Pete Sandoval, also a lot from the Chilean scene as well as short interviews/features on Astaroth (FL) Atomic Aggressor, Demigod, Disharmonic Orchestra, Rotting Christ, Lubricant, Malevolent Creation, Necrodead, Samael, Xenophobia and more…(thanks to Mario for the submission)

Holocaust #5 (Poland) 1991

Holocaust #5 (Poland) 1991. Editor: Tomasz Krajewski”

Classic  zine from eventual Pagan Records (Poland) founder Tomasz Krajewski. Features an interesting editorial on the prevalence of trendy death metal people inhabiting the scene at the time, as well as an article on the occult called “The Voice of the Dark” by a fellow from Mexico named Alberto Vorkt Jimenez. The cover and back cover establish a brilliant, minimalistic touch, setting a great mood as you move through the text within. Has interviews and features with Afflicted, Possessed, Benediction, Imperator, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Revenant, Samael, Sindrome, Unleashed, Thanatos, and many more.

Pit Magazine #8 (Colorado, USA) 1992

Pit Magazine #8 (Colorado, USA) 1992, Editor: “Wendy Perelstein”

A massive update here….Pit Magazine was published by Mosh Pit Records, a metal record store out of Colorado Springs, Colorado, that is sadly missed. Their magazine started in the late 80s and ran into the 90s with ambitions of being a national magazine of sorts, and they eventually did get okay distribution, but in essence it was really just a nice pro-printed, national zine – and that is what made it cool (It seems there is also still some online presence, as they have a facebook page and an outdated website, yet I think the last print issue was put out about 5 years ago…I could be wrong).

With better content and interviews than most national mags, it was packed with all the relevant bands and more. This issue was no exception, featuring an interview with Metallica-Jason Newsted when the Black album dropped (talking about their songwriting and change), Bolt Thrower (!!!), Nick Menza around “Rust in Peace” era-Megadeth, Chris Barnes from Cannibal Corpse talking about serial killers and why he hates (hated?) Phil from Sacred Reich, Godflesh, Autopsy, Necroticism-era Carcass, Soundgarden, Solitude Aeturnus, Blessed are the Sick-era Morbid Angel interview with Dave Vincent, Anacrusis, an extended interview with Pete Steele for the CarnivoreType O Negative fans, the Hoffman Brothers of Deicide, Exhorder, Immolation, Coroner, Entombed, Cancer, Grave, Gorguts, Napalm Death, Obituary, Unleashed, and many more.

Disposable Underground #5 (VA, USA) 1992

Disposable Underground #5 (VA, USA) 1992, Editor: “Richard Johnson”

Zine #5 of DI, out of the Virginia suburbs of Washington DC. TO RECAP: At the time Rich was in grind pathfinders ENEMY SOIL, prior to going on to playing in the likes of AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED and now DRUGS OF FAITH.  This long running zine, that can now be found online in downloadable format here.

This one has a particularly exceptional interview with Carcass‘ Bill Steer during their DC stop on the Necroticism tour (1992), and covers a lot of interesting points, both political and musical. Also are interviews and features with Finland’s Demigod, Napalm Death, Unleashed, Doomstone, Agnostic Front, Exempt and Obituary, as well as some cool live reviews and ads.

Diabolical Noise #6 (Poland) 1993.

Diabolical Noise #6 (Poland) 1993. Editor: Jaro Szubrycht

This zine out of Poland was photocopied and folded together, with no staple, yet still super cool with great outlines, borders, and a nice sense of humor. The obvious drawback is the super small type (but that can be fixed by ‘zooming in’ on the pages/jpegs as needed with or without your browser), but beyond that there is demo-era interviews (or articles about) Cradle of Filth, Enslaved, and (a tiny) one on Behemoth. Additionally, there are some excellent scene reports from the UK and elsewhere, inties with Thergothon, Immolation, Inverted, Cannibal Corpse, Unleashed, Corpus Rottus, and much more.

Adversity Zine #5, November, 1990

Adversity Zine #5, November, 1990. Editor: “John Krupa”

Stapled and photocopied from Connecticut. Nice “BUSH VERSUS SADDAM” cover, and an overall punk vibe. Features include live reviews, Houston and NZ Scene Reports, as well as interviews with Disrupt (!), Mortician, Ripping Corpse, Carcass, Skeletal Earth, Unleashed, and more.

Slayer #8 (Norway) 1991

Slayer #8 (Norway) 1991. Editor: Jon “Metalion” Kristiansen (highlights)

Present at the creation, this is perhaps the most famous death/black metal zine ever out of Europe. This long-running example of underground gold was seemingly always packed with the best and most notable interviews, surrounded by top-notch DIY art and layout, on great pro-print. It really speaks for itself, and for die-hards I highly recommend the recent hardback pressing of the final issue, as well as the “Slayer Mag Diaries” due out in June from Bazillion Points.
