Metal History Through Fanzines

Running Wild (GER)

Loud ‘N’ Proud #2 (East Germany) 1990

Loud ‘N’ Proud #2 (East Germany) 1990. Editor: “Andreas Schoewe” (auf Deutsch)

Second issue of this East German zine [“Das Erste Hard Rock und Heavy Metal Journal der DDR”] – this time a bit more even and coming into form – [again, I was told that this was the first hard rock/metal zine to come from the former East Germany (Rostock-Deutsche Demokratische Republik or DDR/GDR) prior to reunification]. Once more, a great window into the German metal/Hard Rock scene in the late 1980s/early 1990 with a live review of Black Sabbath and Running Wild, interviews and features with Headless, Holy Moses, Majk Mati, Mania, Treat, Viper, Mordred, Sabbat, Risk, Rosa Rock, Scanner, a Bon Scott tribute, a Heavy Metal against AIDS feature, plus album reviews and a Sodom lyrics thing and a Tankard pic I have not seen before. “Das Erste Hard Rock und Heavy Metal Journal der DDR” – Nice historical gem here. I was told (and it is also stated in the contents/credits) that this was the first hard rock/metal zine to come from the former East Germany (Rostock-Deutsche Demokratische Republik or DDR/GDR) prior to reunification. It appears it might be true, because for some reason this issue has a number of photos ‘redacted'(?), so perhaps it was censored before it was released? Who knows. Anyways, great snapshot of the German scene in the late 1980s with some Noise Records bands and others including Accept, B.O.R.N., Bonfire, Defcon, Hardholz, Kreator, Lanadrid, Mephisto, Noisehunter, Rage, Running Wild, Scorpions, Titan, U.D.O., Vice and a review of the X-Mas Metal Meeting in Dusseldorf  on December 19, 1989, that featured Manowar, Saxon, Fates Warning, Sabbat and Lizzy Borden, plus album reviews. Thrash’em All #3 (Poland) 1988

Thrash’em All #3 (Poland) 1988. Editor: “Mariusz Kmiołek” (in Polish)

Early issue of this pioneering Polish fanzine/magazine. In Polish, but even if you can’t read it, still a cool look into the dedicated, passionate world of the East Bloc underground in the 80’s…I am sure this was not easy to put together. Live reviews, features and interviews with The Great Kat, Running Wild, Holy Terror, Anthrax, Exumer, Satan, Minotaur, Wilczy/Wolf Spider, Merciless Death (POL) Kreon, Raxas, Haron, Metal Mind records, reviews and more…

Speed Attack #1 (Germany) 1984 (auf Deutsch)

Speed Attack #1 (Germany) 1984. (auf Deutsch) Editors: “Michael Trengert, Peter Zohren and Tomo Dolevic”

Early German zine released in the year of 1984. One of the editors was notably Michael Trengert, who went on to be one of the Summer Breeze Festival (GER) organizers and also a former European manager of Metal Blade Records. He recently died after a long battle with illness, so this goes out to him, in the metal afterlife. Features Hellhammer (in transition to Celtic Frost), Destruction, Battleaxe, Mania, pics of Mercyful Fate and Metallica, a Loudness live review, Overdose (GER), Running Wild, Vortex (NETH), Martyr (NETH), Stormwitch, Warlock, Venom, Grave Digger, Acid, and more.

Metal Massacre #1 (Germany) 1984

Metal Massacre #1 (Germany) 1984 (in German/auf Deutsch). Editors: “Dieter Machleid” and “Mario Erceg”

A relic from the German heavy metal scene circa 1984. I did not see an actual date printed anywhere, but judging by the albums featured, I can safely say this was put together in the latter half of ’84, and might have seen an early 1985 release. Printed “auf Deutsch,” it covers a healthy number of German bands at the time, as well as international, including: Avenger (PRE-Rage), Grave Digger, Iron Maiden, one of the German Overkills (yes, there were two, popular name!), Running Wild, Savage (UK), Steeler (GER), Stormwitch, The Rods, Tokyo Blade, Trance, WARLOCK(!) and more. If you can not read German, have fun with the imagery…or use their playlists as a reference for your vinyl-hunting ‘must have’ exploits- cheers and thanks to B.B. for the contrib!

Features, Ads, live reviews and interviews with Anvil, Angel Witch, Battleaxe, Blacklace, Nasty Savage, Hades, Hirax, Manilla Road, Raven, Motorhead, Lee Aaron, Running Wild, Venom, Twisted Sister, Sodom, and more…
