Descent: An excellent offering from the mid-90s focusing primarily on black, dark and darker-oriented death metal [NOTE: While I included this issue on SBMS to make it searchable and ‘research’able in the broader archive, the editor (Steve O’Malley) actually has all of the issues online as PDF’s (along with autobiographical notes) on his website Ideologic.] Includes interviews with Burzum, Emperor, Accursed, Beyond Dawn, Solemn, In The Woods…, Necrophobic, Sigh, Bestial Warlust, Manes, Savior, Mangled, Nagual Mag., Immolation, a feature on Gorgoroth, as well as an essay on Heathenism in Classical Music, a US scene report and reviews.

Norwegian zine from Evil Ed, published by Red Stream. Contains a number of interesting interviews from (what was) an kind of transitional time in the underground (circa 2000/2001), with first era-ending (the first time around) chats with Anglecorpse and Asphyx, as well as interviews with Darkthrone, Diabolic, Decayed, Holocausto Canibal, Immolation, Macabre, Machetazo, Morbid Angel, Necrophagia, Nifelheim, Rebaelliun, Vomitory, demo reviews, a feature on Jeffrey Dahmer, and more. Skyclad are on the cover…but not inside (sigh)….one of my all time favorite bands (after Sabbat!)…Martin Walkyier was and is among THE best lyricists in the history of metal…there – I said it! Anyways…this is a zine from Ari of the Finnish band Morningstar, with interviews/features/updates with Immolation (talking about leaving Roadrunner Records), Congestion, Necromantia, Varathron, Troll (94), a number of reviews, Finnish scene report/Finnish witchcraft history, and more. Brief, but fun (how I love that typewriter font from the early-mid 90s)…issue #1 is next – thanks S.L.!

Another zine from the vibrant Chilean scene of the late 1980’s, also another one that Andrés Padilla had a hand in (presently of Grinder Magazine and the Underground Never Dies! book). Packed with interviews and reviews, a good cross-section of the scene at the time, in Spanish, but the layout is classic as well (even if you can not read the text). Features Acid Reign, Apparition, Atheist, Bloodfeast, Cynic, Deceased, Grave, Immolation, Revenant, Merciless, Nihilist, Morbid, Revelation, Sadus, Sepultura, Skeletal Earth, Soothsayer, Verbal Assault, and many more.

EXCELLENT ZINE – VERY well laid out (with KILLER cover art!), put together by Mr. Tarasiuk, who apparently got most of the interviews and pics when he was in Belgium in 1991 or so (check out the editorial), catching all the classic tours of the 90-91 era…(really, who is not jealous reading this now?!) Numerous classic bands represented here, at the height of the ‘golden’ era of death metal, interviews with Benediction, Bolt Thrower, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Cathedral, Dark Tranquilitty, Dead Infection, Disgrace, Dismember, Gorefest, Grave, Immolation, Morbid Angel, My Dying Bride, and more…
