Metal History Through Fanzines

Gorgon (FR)

Charontaphos #1 (Netherlands) 1993

Charontaphos #1 (Netherlands) 1993. Editor: Ndizi Na Nyama

Dutch zine with a wide range of early 90s underground notables. Interviews with Absu, Apator, Belphegor (that old logo!), Belial, Burzum, Dark Tranquillity, Ceremonial Oath, D.A.B., Decayed, Elbereth, Gorgon, Gorement, Inverted, Wombbath, Katatonia, Malefic Oath, Spina Bifida, Nuclear Death, Mordor, Necropsy, Cartilage, Nembrionic Hammerdeath, Momentum, Nightfall, Gutwrench, Pyrexia, Sentenced, Sigh, Throne of Ahaz, Witches, Sathanas, a Norwegian Scene report, reviews and more…this was a submission, but after some research, it appears it was originally scanned and shared to Asmodian Coven by Pawel (so thanks for preserving the history Pawel!)(Also interesting, the editors ‘nom de plume’-“Ndizi Na Nyama” -is actually Swahili for “bananas/plantains and meat”). PDF in downloads section.

The Oath #1 (IRE) 1993. Editor: “Alan Averill”

This zine from Primordial vocalist Alan (aka A.A. Nemtheanga) is a time capsule of rabid, underground enthusiasm. Sincere, honest commentary, essays etc. Those were exciting days indeed…with reviews, a Danish scene report, interviews and features on Acheron, Afterlife (IRE), Fifth Dominion, Emperor, Gorgon, Impaled Nazarene, Sentenced, Misanthrope, Moratorium, Disaster Area, Necromantia, Nightfall, Rotting Christ, Sceptical Schizo, Therion and more…(thx to deathmetal.org for sharing).

Under the Corpse Zine #1 (?) (NY, USA) 1993

Under the Corpse Zine  #1 (?)  (NY, USA) 1993. Editor: “Paul Beyer”

I recently got this xeroxed and stapled issue from a friend in Montreal.  It’s a nice one from ’93, and features interviews with bands like Pyrexia, Internal Bleeding, Nokturnel, (a long one with) Biohazard, Life of Agony, Type O Negative. Ossuary, Corpsegrinder, Sick of it All, Crucifix, Church of Misery, Scatterbrain, Alchemist, and more. Lots of reviews, an Australian scene report, and some adverts. Good stuff. I think it’s the first issue, but the back cover says #3 in the art, so not sure. Enjoy.
