Mettalic Butcher #4  (Poland) 1992. Editor: Rob Tarasiuk

EXCELLENT ZINE – VERY well laid out (with KILLER cover art!), put together by Mr. Tarasiuk, who apparently got most of the interviews and pics when he was in Belgium in 1991 or so (check out the editorial), catching all the classic tours of the 90-91 era…(really, who is not jealous reading this now?!) Numerous classic bands represented here, at the height of the ‘golden’ era of death metal, interviews with Benediction, Bolt Thrower, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Cathedral, Dark Tranquilitty, Dead Infection, Disgrace, Dismember, Gorefest, Grave, Immolation, Morbid Angel, My Dying Bride, and more…

Classic  zine from eventual Pagan Records (Poland) founder Tomasz Krajewski. Features an interesting editorial on the prevalence of trendy death metal people inhabiting the scene at the time, as well as an article on the occult called “The Voice of the Dark” by a fellow from Mexico named Alberto Vorkt Jimenez. The cover and back cover establish a brilliant, minimalistic touch, setting a great mood as you move through the text within. The Untouchables #3 (Finland) 1993 (Finnish)

The Untouchables #3 (Finland) 1993. Editor: “Timo Isoaho”

This zine was printed and stapled, somewhere between a digest size and a regular magazine-size, and covers a nice selection of both Finnish and international bands. A hard read for many, as it is written in Finnish, it is nevertheless a part of what was an explosive number of zines out of such a small country during the time. This one features interviews with the now cult-status likes of God Forsaken and Master’s Hammer, as well as Demigod, Dead Head, Drowned Productions, Gorefest, Lubricant, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Tarot, Sororicide, Wild Rags Records and for you “vanha koulu” Suomen readers out there, there are a number of cool live show reviews from across Finland from 1992…were you there? Also look for numerous cool adverts spread throughout…

Clandestine Zine (Santiago, Chile) #1 July 1994 (Español)

Clandestine Zine (Santiago, Chile) #1 July 1994. Editor: “Robert P. Zarathustra”

Here at SBMS, a noticeable lack of zines from the non-English speaking world compelled me to start digging up the zines I have in other languages, so here is a first from Chile (in Spanish). The main feature of this issue is a lengthy interview with Uruguay’s Inner Sanctum, notable as a project involving Anton Reisenegger (of Chile’s Pentagram, and currently in Lock Up). Other cool contributions (for those who can read it) include interviews with Gorefest, the highly underrated Texans Imprecation, Macabre, Inner Sanctum, Alchemist, Allegiance, Anathema, Gorefest, Macabre, Mercyful Fate, Nightfall, Ripping Corpse, Undercroft, Vital Remains, Osmose Productions and others. (Note: A few interviews in this zine were unreadable due to printing errors, so they were not included). Lastly, I have numerous other zines in German, Finnish, and more that will go up periodically to diversify the site in coming months…

Also, Clandestine was resurrected in 2010. They published their second issue in
2011 and will press a third issue in December 2012. They are online here:

Deathvomit Zine #2 (US) 1990

Deathvomit Zine #2 (US) 1990. Editor: Jeff McClelland

This printed, stapled zine comes from the Virgina side of Washington DC, pressed and edited by Jeff McClelland, who if I am not mistaken was also vocalist in the band Doomstone (featuring members of Deceased). The cover was an original drawing by a guy named Tom Harrison, and the back cover shows that I have here a hand-stamped “issue #108.” When you look inside you immediately notice the odd choice of colors that run through the zine, with the yellow heading/font being the hardest on the eyes- I can imagine he was not happy when he got these back from the press. But with all zines of the era, the content and interviews is what matters, and this issue is a historical goldmine for the underground.

Featuring VERY EARLY interviews and/or articles on Mortician, Tiamat, early Polish pioneers Imperator (best quote to read in Polish accent: “We had some nice gigs lately together with a lot of slammers, divers and we had alcohol/sex after shows“). As well as Amputation (pre-Immortal), Afflicted Convulsion (pre-Afflicted), Macrodex, “Cromlech” demo-era Darkthrone interview with Gylve Nagell (aka Fenriz), Rotting Christ, Gorefest, Nun Slaughter, Asphyx, Therion, Crematory, Abhorrence (pre-Amorphis), an Old Funeral article, and much more.
