Pagan Kalewala #2 (Finland) 1994
Pagan Kalewala #2 (Finland) 1994. Editor: “Ari Honkonen ”
Skyclad are on the cover…but not inside (sigh)….one of my all time favorite bands (after Sabbat!)…Martin Walkyier was and is among THE best lyricists in the history of metal…there – I said it! Anyways…this is a zine from Ari of the Finnish band Morningstar, with interviews/features/updates with Immolation (talking about leaving Roadrunner Records), Congestion, Necromantia, Varathron, Troll (94), a number of reviews, Finnish scene report/Finnish witchcraft history, and more. Brief, but fun (how I love that typewriter font from the early-mid 90s)…issue #1 is next – thanks S.L.!

Grind Zone #1 (Italy/Spain) ? 1994 (En Español)
Grind Zone #1 (Italy/Spain) ? 1994. Director: “Claudio Cubito” (En Español)
A somewhat mainstream Italian publication, translated into Spanish for Spain (and published by a German conglomerate!), yet containing many cult underground acts in their prime. This goes to show just how far the ‘underground’ was from being really underground by 1994 – only to collapse back into obscurity more or less by 1995-96. Features and interviews with Entombed, Cathedral, Asphyx, Burzum, Tiamat, Samael, Gorefest, Anathema, Amorphis, Cynic, In Flames, Doomstone, Dark Tranquillity, Expulsion, Misanthrope, Osmose Productions, Century Media, Nuclear Blast, Peaceville, Roadrunner, Death, Eucharist, Impaled Nazarene, Absu, Phlebotomized, Sadness, Schizo, Cradle of Filth, Mind Riot, Black Shine, and Sadist.

Slayer Zine #10 (Norway) 1994
Slayer Zine #10 (Norway). 1994. Editor: “Metalion” (highlights)
This is a massive issue, 75+ pages of (nearly all) black metal, featuring almost every major name in the scene at the time. Printed on thick paper, with a red cover, it ushered in yet another step in great quality from this long running Norwegian zine. Also check out the Bazillion Points Press of the “Slayer Mag Diaries” -out now. Highlights include VERY early interviews with Opeth (even before Timo Ketola masterfully reworked their logo) and Dissection, right after the release of The Somberlain. For dark humor, I suggest the great answers provided in both the Nifelheim and Sadistik Exekution interviews. And well, for all the black metal history buffs, this one is just stocked with it (check out the prison interview with Thorns) . Also of note is the fantastic Bathory retrospective.

Diabolical Noise #6 (Poland) 1993.
Diabolical Noise #6 (Poland) 1993. Editor: Jaro Szubrycht
This zine out of Poland was photocopied and folded together, with no staple, yet still super cool with great outlines, borders, and a nice sense of humor. The obvious drawback is the super small type (but that can be fixed by ‘zooming in’ on the pages/jpegs as needed with or without your browser), but beyond that there is demo-era interviews (or articles about) Cradle of Filth, Enslaved, and (a tiny) one on Behemoth. Additionally, there are some excellent scene reports from the UK and elsewhere, inties with Thergothon, Immolation, Inverted, Cannibal Corpse, Unleashed, Corpus Rottus, and much more.
