Grinder #1 (Chile) Noviembre 1993 (Español). Editor: Andrés Padilla

Exciting news from Chile these days. Andrés Padilla, who used to do Violence Zine (Chile) in the late 80’s, and currently editing the long-running Grinder magazine, recently published the book Retrospectiva al Metal Chileno (1983-1993), with a limited edition 12″ LP compilation released by IronBonehead Productions (Ger) that includes rare and old death metal Chilean bands never released on vinyl beforeMore info here http://corvusdiscos.cl/label_retrospectiva.htm

Now he is working on another book called Underground Never Dies! (hardcover, tons of old school flyers and rare pics from cult bands, and interviews with lots of key-members of the UG scene), plus a limited compilation 12″ LP filled with bands of the 80’s, from all over the world. More info here: Underground Never Dies!

Grind Zone #1 (Italy/Spain) ? 1994 (En Español)

Grind Zone #1 (Italy/Spain) ? 1994. Director: “Claudio Cubito” (En Español)

A somewhat mainstream Italian publication, translated into Spanish for Spain (and published by a German conglomerate!), yet containing many cult underground acts in their prime. This goes to show just how far the ‘underground’ was from being really underground by 1994 – only to collapse back into obscurity more or less by 1995-96. Features and interviews with Entombed, Cathedral, Asphyx, Burzum, Tiamat, Samael, Gorefest, Anathema, Amorphis, Cynic, In Flames, Doomstone, Dark Tranquillity, Expulsion, Misanthrope, Osmose Productions, Century Media, Nuclear Blast, Peaceville, Roadrunner, Death, Eucharist, Impaled Nazarene, Absu, Phlebotomized, Sadness, Schizo, Cradle of Filth, Mind Riot, Black Shine, and Sadist.

Holocaust #5 (Poland) 1991

Holocaust #5 (Poland) 1991. Editor: Tomasz Krajewski”

Classic  zine from eventual Pagan Records (Poland) founder Tomasz Krajewski. Features an interesting editorial on the prevalence of trendy death metal people inhabiting the scene at the time, as well as an article on the occult called “The Voice of the Dark” by a fellow from Mexico named Alberto Vorkt Jimenez. The cover and back cover establish a brilliant, minimalistic touch, setting a great mood as you move through the text within. Has interviews and features with Afflicted, Possessed, Benediction, Imperator, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Revenant, Samael, Sindrome, Unleashed, Thanatos, and many more.

Carrion Zine #3 (Finland) 1993

Carrion Zine #3 (Finland) 1993, Editors: “Antti Luukkanen” and “Santtu Reinikainen”

It might appear that there is an inordinate amount of zines from Finland on this site, and your perceptions are correct. I did a lot of trading with Finnish folks back in the day because well, there was a lot of cool and original music coming out of this peripheral northern European land at the time, and as such I sought to get as many zines as possible, ordering from whatever advert I got that said “Suomi.” That said, this one was a cool digest-sized zine, and I recall distinctly writing back and forth with the editor (Antti)- and at one point, late one night in 1993, I remember coming home after a few drinks and calling him up and trying to talk to him, and perhaps because of the language barrier or the sheer shock of a random call from a foreigner, it went quite…weird. Anyway, he put out a cool zine that was written in better english than most US-based zines, with cool commentary on the scene at the time, and this issue has very timely interviews with Anathema, At the Gates, and The Gathering among others, and there is even an interview with Finnish punk band Hybrid Children, who never made it far outside Suomi, but were actually very good and could have been the bigger than Green Day or whoever if they got the right ‘international push’…anyways, here is (most of) the content…

Clandestine Zine (Santiago, Chile) #1 July 1994 (Español)

Clandestine Zine (Santiago, Chile) #1 July 1994. Editor: “Robert P. Zarathustra”

Here at SBMS, a noticeable lack of zines from the non-English speaking world compelled me to start digging up the zines I have in other languages, so here is a first from Chile (in Spanish). The main feature of this issue is a lengthy interview with Uruguay’s Inner Sanctum, notable as a project involving Anton Reisenegger (of Chile’s Pentagram, and currently in Lock Up). Other cool contributions (for those who can read it) include interviews with Gorefest, the highly underrated Texans Imprecation, Macabre, Inner Sanctum, Alchemist, Allegiance, Anathema, Gorefest, Macabre, Mercyful Fate, Nightfall, Ripping Corpse, Undercroft, Vital Remains, Osmose Productions and others. (Note: A few interviews in this zine were unreadable due to printing errors, so they were not included). Lastly, I have numerous other zines in German, Finnish, and more that will go up periodically to diversify the site in coming months…

Also, Clandestine was resurrected in 2010. They published their second issue in
2011 and will press a third issue in December 2012. They are online here:
