Grind Zone #1 (Italy/Spain) ? 1994 (En Español)

Grind Zone #1 (Italy/Spain) ? 1994. Director: “Claudio Cubito” (En Español)

A somewhat mainstream Italian publication, translated into Spanish for Spain (and published by a German conglomerate!), yet containing many cult underground acts in their prime. This goes to show just how far the ‘underground’ was from being really underground by 1994 – only to collapse back into obscurity more or less by 1995-96. Features and interviews with Entombed, Cathedral, Asphyx, Burzum, Tiamat, Samael, Gorefest, Anathema, Amorphis, Cynic, In Flames, Doomstone, Dark Tranquillity, Expulsion, Misanthrope, Osmose Productions, Century Media, Nuclear Blast, Peaceville, Roadrunner, Death, Eucharist, Impaled Nazarene, Absu, Phlebotomized, Sadness, Schizo, Cradle of Filth, Mind Riot, Black Shine, and Sadist.

Holocaust #5 (Poland) 1991

Holocaust #5 (Poland) 1991. Editor: Tomasz Krajewski”

Classic  zine from eventual Pagan Records (Poland) founder Tomasz Krajewski. Features an interesting editorial on the prevalence of trendy death metal people inhabiting the scene at the time, as well as an article on the occult called “The Voice of the Dark” by a fellow from Mexico named Alberto Vorkt Jimenez. The cover and back cover establish a brilliant, minimalistic touch, setting a great mood as you move through the text within. Has interviews and features with Afflicted, Possessed, Benediction, Imperator, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Revenant, Samael, Sindrome, Unleashed, Thanatos, and many more.

Chamber of Sorrow Zine #4 (Wisconsin, USA) 1993

Chamber of Sorrow Zine  #4 (Wisconsin, USA) 1993. Editors: “Jason Verhagen and T.J. Rappel”

I was feeling a bit nice this evening after having downed a few Imperial Stouts, so after looking through this long forgotten gem, I was stunned to find a plethora (or should I say inordinate amount) of amazing demo reviews. This issue is simply stacked with page after page of what amounts to a “who’s who” of second generation underground death, black, doom and more. This issue is quite a fun read, just leaf through the reviews and it’s a trip down memory lane, not just for the bands that got ‘big’ after this era, but for the bands that did not. Lots of lost demo glory here. On top of that, there are interviews with Paradise Lost, Liers in Wait, Evocation, Demilich, Throne of Ahaz, Amorphis, Vomitory, God Forsaken, Pitch Shifter, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, and more. Great layout, fantastic original art, and killer vibe.

Diarium Autopsia # 2 (Finland) 1992

Diarium Autopsia # 2 (Finland) 1992. Editors: Heidi Lipsanen and Sonja Kangas

This fantastic, yet short lived zine was stapled and photocopied, but read and felt like a professional. From Finland, yet written in great English, it focused on the Finnish scene extensively (with fun pre-Rotten Sound interview with Vomiturition, and other stuff like Mordicus and Belial). Also features cool interviews with early Swedish notables like Afflicted and Liars in Wait (w/ Kristian Wahlin), and the interview with Mike Patton/Mr. Bungle is pretty exceptional. Plus Thromdarr, Rot, Uncanny, Sentenced, Pestigore, Paradise Lost, Napalm Death, The Corpse Grinders, Lubricant, Incantation, Exempt, Dismember, Decomposed, Ancient Rites, Amorphis and more..
