Metal History Through Fanzines

Mercyful Fate (DK)

Eruptions From Below #5 (Toronto, Canada) 1993

Eruptions From Below  #5  (Toronto, Canada) 1993. Editor: “Laurie Fortune

Copied and stapled zine out of Ontario (formerly out of Buffalo). Solid and packed with ads, representing the ’93 death metal underground quite well. Features numerous reviews, and (brief) interviews with Cannibal Corpse, Lucifers Hammer, Deteriorate, Angelkill, Exterminance, and more, with the highlights being the killer live reviews of the classic Suffocation, Obituary, and Deicide tours from that year.

Rockcor (Russia) #9, 1995 (in Russian)

Rockcor (Russia) #9, 1995. Editor: ?

This is one of the few older Russian publications I have, so if you can not read it, enjoy the pics. I also checked and it seems this is being published again in some newer, modern form. Either way, interviews and features with Pantera, Darkthrone, Dismember, Deadworld, Dying Fetus, Rage, Mercyful Fate, Necropsychosis, Leukemia, and more.

Clandestine Zine (Santiago, Chile) #1 July 1994 (Español)

Clandestine Zine (Santiago, Chile) #1 July 1994. Editor: “Robert P. Zarathustra”

Here at SBMS, a noticeable lack of zines from the non-English speaking world compelled me to start digging up the zines I have in other languages, so here is a first from Chile (in Spanish). The main feature of this issue is a lengthy interview with Uruguay’s Inner Sanctum, notable as a project involving Anton Reisenegger (of Chile’s Pentagram, and currently in Lock Up). Other cool contributions (for those who can read it) include interviews with Gorefest, the highly underrated Texans Imprecation, Macabre, and others. (Note: A few interviews in this zine were unreadable due to printing errors, so they were not included). Lastly, I have numerous other zines in German, Finnish, and more that will go up periodically to diversify the site in coming months…

Also, Clandestine was resurrected in 2010. They published their second issue in
2011 and will press a third issue in December 2012. They are online here:

Mercyful Fate/Motorhead/Exciter interviews from 1984

Here is a brief update, as I am heading out of town for 2 weeks, over to Europe for the Tuska Festival in Finland, and then some other stops. The following are interviews with Hank Sherman and Timi Grabber from Mercyful Fate, from the Ontario theater show in Washington DC on their tour with Exciter and Motorhead in late 1984. Also is a show review from the Baltimore gig the following night, and an interview with Wurzel from Motorhead (who died last week), and John Ricci from Exciter. They are from the Grinder Zine #4….cheers.
