Intellektual Spew #5 (TN, USA) 1998
Intellektual Spew #5 (TN, USA) 1998, Editors: “Bart and Jeff”
Late in the 1990s, print zines were still thriving (despite the internet taking its first stabs at online-zines through DIY sites hosted by Geocities, among others), and Intellektual Spew was a standout in the underground during the time. It was nicely printed and bound, and featured underground bands across the metal spectrum, as by 1998, death and black metal fractured into numerous spin-off subgenres that labels The End Records (interviewed here) began to specialize in. This issue features the likes of an EARLY Arch Enemy (still with the original singer), Rotten Sound, Assuck, Australia’s Damaged, Quebec’s Martyr, Finland’s And Oceans, Incantation, and Agalloch members ‘other’ band Sculptured. There is also an interesting article on homophobia in the metal underground, as well as with Andreas from The End Records. The cover is by notable underground artist Russ Evans.
